Tibetan, Women, Violence and Video Games

This is a somewhat catchy title, touting itself. But there a meaning to that title, which I will explain in this article.

You may have noticed that there are more and more “day” events?
World Day toilets, World Day of Kindness Day World Animal … and so on.

Well last month on November 24th and 25th, it was the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. And it was also the World Day of gaming.

Sometimes the irony simply amazes me.
While a group of citizen Tibetan Community of France and the association Students initiated a march for a Free Tibet, other people were playing games.

While some play, others cry.

While some shoot at anything that moves in a Call of Duty, others pay a tribute to the 80 Tibetans who set themselves on fire since 2009, because that is what they have left to meet the China’s crackdown in Tibet.

So what can we, the ones who celebrate the European video games, do?! What can we do every day so that Tibet will find their dignity and freedom they desire for such a long time, have the right to speak their language and preserve it so that their language will not vanish like other languages throughout history?

IS IT OK to continue celebrating video games? In fact, did you know that it was the World video games day? Well, this does not surprise me.

Another story and another oversize idea created without thinking and vanished without any interest.

Those organizations (and many others that are not related specifically to that matter) propose a very simple solution that everyone can take action in their day to day activities without really complicating anyone’s life: STOP BUYING FROM CHINA!

When you’re thinking of buying a product, seek that product in several places. See if there is an option to purchase that same product from a supplier that is NOT from China.
That’s right, they are talking about online boycott without taking the lead. For the more adventurous, when you do not have a choice, do not buy it.

It is easy to do, it costs nothing, it is non-violent (like the Tibetan love ). If everyone does it, hell, if half of the people do it, it may be able to change something.

If it doesn’t, at least you can say you tried, you did your best. You didn’t stay Indifferent, fingers on video game controllers to celebrate yet another Stupid Video Game World day.

Super Heroes During Wars

In different reality, Superman could redirect missiles and rockets from their path, Batman cured injured people and Captain America would prevent world wars.
How did superheroes fought their enemies throughout the years? And what happened to comic books once they aimed for peace?

It was much simpler then. People felt safer, not because there were no nuclear weapons or less criminal.

If you have someone that outruns trains and can fly and stop bullets with his body on your side, there was no need to feel scared.

Can we assume that World War I and II would never happen if we had the super heroes in our world?

He would probably stop it before the war began.

Unfortunately, superheroes only exist in comic books and movies. In real life wars are handled by flesh and blood human beings with no special super powers (and it’s an understatement).

But that doesn’t mean Super Heroes can’t contribute to the war efforts in other ways…

Immigrants Heroes

The first super hero was created right after the First World War. Jewish immigrants who had to flee because of the war, sought to create a hero that will be strong enough to ensure the world would never see another suffering. Thus was created the first superhero – Superman, Man of Steel, by Jerry Siegel and George Schuster.

When WW2 started in 1939 the comic book writers realized that it’s not enough to create the character on paper, but that the superhero can do much more as well as the entire comic world that was extremely popular than.

Comic books were recruited for pro-American propaganda, who called to support the war effort and America’s decision to join the war after the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941.

The comic books were sent to the front to encourage the soldiers and give them hope, same as they supported the people at home.

The image of super heroes like Superman and Batman fighting the Japanese and encouraging to continue and buy bonds so that the bullets will not run out were very common.

Probably the most famous hero in WW2 was Captain America. It was released in 1940 by two young writers name Simon and Kirby.

The two young writers were deeply influenced by what’s happening in Europe and they felt they were obligated to express their opinion and try to influence the American government in taking actions.

In the first Captain America comic book we get to see Captain America punches Hitler in the face while wrapped in the US flag and wears the US outfit.

After Pearl Harbor, with the direct help of the comic books, the American nation felt a rush of patriotism and national unity, and was fully supporting the government’s decision to join the fighting

Vietnam flashbacks

Vietnam War however earned a very different attitude, reflected in comics published at that time.

America was divided between people who thought fighting in Vietnam is legit and those who felt America doesn’t have a right to be there.

On the one hand were those who called the military action a fair action, aimed to maintain democracy in that part of the world, and saw America itself as a kind of super hero. On the other side there were those who thought the price is too high for human life, especially when the fighting takes place on the other side of the world and without the support of the locals.

Comic, whose status was undermined mainly because of all the World War II topics mentioned in it, has renewed revival when superheroes returned to the front.

But this time, unlike previous war, the hero fighters took part in a war they did not always agree on. The stories had a more mature tone and were very criticizing. In Captain America edition #107 the hero, who didn’t get to see the end of World War II because he was in a coma for 18 years, had to deal with battle-shock and the death of his best friend Bucky.

Bucky served as a sidekick of Captain America during World War I, similar to the role of Robin, the most famous young Batman’s assistant.

Fantastic Four – Off to the moon

While the Vietnam War presented the super hero as the all mighty hero who can win any war with justice by his side, he also reflected the personal and emotional cost this war took.

Then the cold war arrived, and with her the unity of the American people, inspired by the massive propaganda on both sides.

But different war requires different heroes with different skills.

The cold war was all about the space race, along with spies and general paranoia. This led to the creation of new super heroes like the Fantastic Four that were created in 1961, same year the Russians put a man in space and several years before the Americans reached the moon.

Iron man is another super hero that rose from the ashes of wars in a time where technology and industrial advantage took their place as effective weapon.

He was a weapon industrial who used his advanced technology to fight other industrial opponents and enemies from the Far East.

The Russians were operating a spy called the Black Widow, who later defected to the USA side, after trying to steal Iron Man’s technology.

Now, why are mentioning that?

The wars changed their form and it’s all about technology today. Controlling the computers, operating machines on remote control and using satellites to track and identify the enemies all over the world are the main business.

Superheroes lost their place in this world. Flying man or Spider webs are useless in those cases. All they can do is help on the local territory and local domestic, fighting petite crimes and help the police with small-time criminals.

Unlike free online games for kids, comic artists express their feelings and personal collective trauma that war creates, and provide a more sober perspective on the enemy will, and on war as a wider subject between good and evil.
